Finaly DevTeam released the PwnageTool 3.1.3. Now every 3GS user is able to jailbreak his iPhone with the newest firmware 3.1 from Apple. I’m wrote here an Howto for creating an custom firmware.

Requirements

If you want, backup your iPhone a last time qith iTunes. However, I recommend to install your iPhone from the scratch and don’t restore any backups, since MuscleNerd from DevTeam said also that some backups can be corrupted and had an negative effect on the battery lifetime.
ultrasn0w users have to watch out for the baseband update! By default PwnageTool deactivates the update but controll is better.

  1. First create a folder on your Desktop called PwnageTool and download PwnageTool and the Firmware.
  2. Start PwnageTool and click OK at the startup message.

  3. Choose the Expert Mode in the upper list, this mode only allows to choose all optionen by yourself.

  4. Choose the right iPhone version, the 3GS, and then choose the only one IPSW which is detected.
    ipsw
  5. Now take the first menu item: General.

  6. If you got an official iPhone contract, deactivate the checkbox Activate the phone, all of you which need to hacktivate the iPhone (you’ve got no iPhone contract) check this option!
Resize the root patition to 700MB, since some people had some troubles at the creation of the IPSW with to small root partitions. A bigger root partition will not have any effects on the daily business with your iPhone.

  7. Go on to the Custom packages settings and deselect Icy, since I never had good experiences with this package manager. Don’t install both at the same time with Pwnage – it could be generate some serious troubles.

  8. If you want, you can choose a different Boot and Recovery logo. Or you can just create an own set: beware of the size of 320×480 and use only PNGs with RGB or grayscale with alpha channel.
  9. Back in the main menu check “Build” and go on. Save the custom firmware with an good name, so you don’t mix it up.

  10. Creation done? Good, exit Pwnage, start your iPhone (if it’s off) connect it to your Mac and reboot in Recovery mode:
    • connect your iPhone (on) with iTunes.
    • Press and hold the Home- and Sleep button at the same time. As soon as the screen goes black relese the Sleep button.
    • Continue holding the Home button until you see the iTunes Logo and a iPhone cable on the display. iTunes will popup a message, that your iPhone was detected in recovery mode.
  11. Now press and hole the Alt/Option key on your Mac while your click on “restore” – a new window will popup and you need to choose a IPSW, take your custom one!
  12. Firmware chosen? Restore on the way? Take a drink, it will take a little of time…

After the reboot of your iPhone, you’ve got a new jailbroken device with Firmware 3.1! Thank you DevTeam!

If you need an unlock with ultrasn0w, here a little Howto:

  • Now search for “ultra”, you should find “ultrasn0w”
  • Install ultrasn0w and reboot your iPhone! You need to switch it totaly off!
  • Plugin your sim card, reboot and wait for the PIN.
  • After a while (1-2 Minutes) you should get gsm access.
