Zur deutschen Version

It looks like my german post for own sms tone for your iPhone is very popular particularly regarding since the new 3G iPhone is on the european market. So I translate this post in english… or I’ll try it. ;)

Here is my little manual, which I found somewhere in the internet, to make your own sms tones. All you need is you own iPhone, some nice music/effects/anything other and iTunes!

  1. Choose a favorite MP3 files and cut out some seconds (2-3 seconds should be enough)
  2. Now import this MP3 in your iTunes and convert it to a AIFF file
  3. Copy this new created AIFF file on your desktop
    If you don’t find this file, look at the properties of the file in iTunes – there should be the path where it’s located on your harddrive.
  4. Now change the ending *.aif in *.caf
  5. Now connect via SCP on your iPhone (Mac: Cyberduck, Win: WinSCP)
  6. Go to “/System/Library/Audio/UISounds”
  7. Here you can change one or all of the default sms tones.
    But create first a backup of the file which you’ll replace! e.g. rename “sms-received6.caf” in “sms-received_6.caf” and then copy your new file to “sms-received_6.caf”.

And here is which file corresponds to which name:

sms-received1.caf -> Tri-tone
sms-received2.caf -> Chime
sms-received3.caf -> Glass
sms-received4.caf -> Horn
sms-received5.caf -> Bell
sms-received6.caf -> Electronic

Not working? Did you all right? Check these points:

  • was it a AIFF file?
  • shorter than 30 seconds?
  • Did you converted a MP3 to an AIFF file via iTunes?
  • Did you replace the right file on your iPhone?
  • Did you really copy the file on your iPhone?

Now have fun with your new sms tones.

    Another useless guide… Ryan, in response to your unanswered question, it appears the only way to connect to the iphone via scp is to jail break it! In other words, voiding your warranty is the only way to customise sounds on the iphone…

    Annoying because:

    a) this guide fails to tell you you need to jail break
    b) apple are that retarded that they don’t even allow customisation of sounds…

    for all you experts out there that say “it doesn’t void your warranty”… sure it doesn’t if you don’t get caught…but the only time they’d find out was if I needed a repair and if the phone wasn’t operational, they would discover it was jailbroken…

  3. Ryan says:

    it doesnt void your warranty because all you have to do is restore it first before you hand it in

  26. Jens says:

    Hi All :-)
    Funny to watch the amount of energ you all put in this topic.
    Have anyone ever considered why Apple made a simple and quite normal task like "change the SMS sound" so hard?
    – i still dont understand it my self. Happy with my Iphone ! Very happy actually.
    But at some points it is far behind the majority within SmatPhone functions (Sony Ericsson, Nokia, HTC, ……)

    Happy Jailbreaking every one…..
    (by the way – you only need to jailbreak iPhone for at short time yet.
    Android based smartPhones will eventually force Apple towards open standards).

  30. Matt says:

    In order to be able to connect to your phone via SCP, you need to

    1) Have it Jailbroken
    2) install the OpenSSH package in either Cydia or Rock

    then, when using Cyberduck/WinSCP to connect, make sure you tell it to use port 22 and choose SSH as the connection protocol and you should be good.

  31. Matty says:

    Ok guys I assume half of you are Americans so that’s probably why your all being sods

    Jailbreaking voids the warranty, FACT! If your iPhone dies which can happen to any hardware, you CANNOT restore it, is that easy to understand? Stop calling people just because they disagree with you, I’m guessing some of you are like 10 so…>.>

  32. anon says:

    you dont have to jailbreak it.
    you can download the app “ifile” from appstore and send the file to the iphone thru your browser with the inbuilt webserver in ifile.

  39. Daymare says:

    Hi all!

    This does indeed work but I found the following to work without SCP'ing into the iPhone.
    I used Audacity to convert the item I wanted from MP3 to AIFF – saved it as my tone onto the desktop as sms-received1.aiff then renamed it to sms-received1.caf

    My iPhone is also Jailbroken which you NEED to do before you do anything else by the way.
    I used a free version of Disk Aid downloaded free from online which allows you to go into your phone.

    Choose /System/Library/Audio/UISounds from the menu, drag the new .caf file you made onto it, and select to overwrite. SImple.

    Then you need to hard reset, so either power off your iPhone and turn back on OR if you have winterboard – simply respring. Sorted.

    Guys, you dont have to use WINSCP at all. WINSCP is needed only for making CHMOD changes to files on the iPhone filesystem. Google for a program named iPhone Broser, and it will do the trick more easily then WINSCP with far less hassle, and you don't even have to jailbreak your phone.
